MS.LEES HUM 8 BLOCK 4

What did we do?

Because today was Monday, our HUM 8 block 4 class did Literature Circle discussions. Afterwards, we worked on our conclusion to our Dialectical Journals and started to write two things our group did well and need to work on for our discussions. We did that again, but this time for our individual participation in the discussions.

Why did we do it? (Learning Intentions)

We did these discussions to practice our oral conversations and our speaking skills. For example, we worked on contributing ideas, asking questions, provoking conversations and encouraging others to participate. We also did these discussions to let the teacher and peers make sure that we actually read the story and could keep up with the conversation.
We did reflections and self evaluations to practice our self-evaluating skills, which could be used frequently in everyday lives. Not only that, but we did reflections to see how much we were listening to the conversation and how much we understood what others had to say.

Reflections and Connections

The Literature Circle things we did today could help us beyond Humanities. For example, these discussions could help you prompt discussions within your friends easier and help you contribute to them more frequently. The self-evaluations that we do can help us correctly evaluate ourselves in other activities, which we might not have a teacher there to do for us. Lastly, reflections help us with our understanding skills, as well as summary skills and listening skills.
A connection that I have, is that in elementary school, we also did these Lit. Circles, but not in so much depth.

Homework Reminders

* Remember to finish your Lit. Circles'...
                          - Reflections
                          - Self Evaluations
                          - 2 good points/ points to work on for your group/self

* INNOVATION FAIR PROPOSALS DUE TOMORROW!

* Research Story outlines if you haven't finished them

Homework Tips

* For your Lit. Circle points that are good/need to improve of your group, get together with them to agree on the same ideas.

* Don't rely on how you think you did on your self-evaluations, use what your tallier tallied on your sheet. Chances are, they are right and you are just full of yourself or you are underestimating yourself.

  1. Well done Jasper - very complete and through describing the intentions behind the activities. I would also suggest adding some information about the process of being an observer - what are the intentions behind this aspect of the activity. I am not sure which story outlines you are referring to - that part is a bit confusing to me. I liked how you made connections to your literature circles in elementary school. I wish you had built on that idea a bit more. For example, what do you mean by "depth" and how were they different? Overall a good job!
