Learning Blog Dec 18

What did we do?
Today, we we worked on creating "commercials" to try and sell our Lit circle novels. We worked on our pros and cons, recommendation, and targeted audience for the book.
Why?
We worked on the pros and cons so that we can recognize the good and bad parts of the book. Also, you have to be specific when describing it, for example, you can't just say that the book is boring because you have to describe which parts were boring and why.
Connections and Reflections
Doing the pros and cons can help with future projects because later on, many other projects require a pros and cons list. Furthermore, you can use the list to make comparisons. Also, you can use the list to make decisions because you can see which choice is more beneficial.
Homework Reminders
No homework except for the paragraph booklet, but I think we will be able to work on it in class.

Learning Blog for Dec.15, 2014

Because I explained mainly the same things that we did last Monday ( Learning Blog of Dec.8, 2014), I will try to explain different things in this learning blog.

WHAT DID WE DO

Today, just like any other Monday, we did literature circles. Following, we did self assessments and conclusions to our discussions and dialectical journals. Today was our final Lit. Circle for out first novel, so we had different ways of self-assessing ourselves.

WHY WE DID IT

We did these Literature Circles to help our speaking, reading, evaluation and summary skills. Doing novel studies help us understand and read novels easier, which makes reading other pieces of writing easier. This will help us a lot later on, since almost every job, from a teacher to an engineer, uses forms of writing to work. Improving our speaking skills also can help us a lot, since we speak in our everyday lives frequently. This would not only help our normal lives, but also our jobs, school and beyond.

REFLECTIONS AND CONNECTIONS

I think Literature Circles help us in a lot of categories that can help us beyond Humanities and even beyond schools. The points I already stated and many more can help with out jobs and life.
A connection that I can make with this, is that in elementary school we also did literature circles. The difference is that in elementary school, we didn't do everything we do now, such as Dialectical Journals and Self Evaluations. Usually, we would just discuss on a certain part of our novel for a short amount of time. We would also do "Chapter Reviews", which are summaries of each and every chapter and what that chapter was about. Literature Circles in Humanities are way more complicated and take longer.

HOMEWORK REMINDERS

* Literature Circles' Self Evaluations due tomorrow

* Learning blogs if you have them this week

* Paragraph Booklet due by winter break

HOMEWORK TIPS

*Literature Circles: Explain in detail why you think like you do. If you write that you improved on something, give examples as to how you improved in that certain area.

*Paragraph Booklets: Don't rush your exercises in the booklets, since the booklet is to help you improve your writing and organizing skills. If you rush it, you won't get better and won't get a good quality booklet to hand in.

3 Words Challenge

Hi, my name is Qiyang and I'm in grade 8. I picked the words confident, enthusiastic, and positive for next year.
I chose confident because I need to believe in myself more.
I chose enthusiastic because I need to be more happy and cheerful when I'm doing my work.
I chose positive because I need to look at the bright side of situations more often. I also need to think more about what I can do, not what I can't do.

3 Words Challenge

My name is Lucy and I'm in grade 8. My three words for the new year would be: focus, reflection, and relaxation.
I chose the first word, focus, because it's what I need to complete many tasks that await me, and I tend to become unfocused after doing something for a long time, because my mind often starts to wander off. I want to be able to maintain my focus while doing something, because it would be very useful for almost my whole lifetime.
I chose the second word, reflection, because reflecting on myself is something that I've never been able to do very well. I like receiving feedback from others than giving myself feedback, but I feel that evaluating myself is just as important, if not more important than giving feedback to others.
I chose the third word, relaxation, because I've been feeling a bit stressed and overwhelmed lately, and I think that I need to relax and clear my mind. Relaxation ties in with focus and reflection in a way, because when I'm not stressed out, I can focus better and reflect on myself more effectively. It can also make me happier and more confident.
The three words: focus, reflection, and relaxation will help me both mentally and emotionally, and achieving them will make me much calmer and more thoughtful.

                                    3 Words challenge

My name is Yujoon and I am in grade 8. For the 3 word challenge I picked my words athletic, respectful, and intelligent.

First word I chose is athletic because I usually don't exercise everyday so I have to get myself fit and play more sports when I have free time. I should get my schedule for each exercise so I could know when to exercise. If I didn't exercise I would get stressed easily when I 'm doing work and I could exercise when I have to or to lose calories.

Second word I chose is respect because I don't listen carefully for important instructions in class so I forget things easily. I do need to listen carefully because I will be on track for homework or other assignments. I should help more people for their homework and encourage others what they have to do for homework.

Third word I chose is intelligent because I don't usually listen carefully for important instructions so I get distracted from other people. I need to work more on intelligent because I need to know a lots about important info from the teacher so I can do assignments easily without being worried what's for homework or etc.

I think I need to work more on my three words so I could get better on respectful, athletic, and intelligent.

Learning Blog Switch?

Hi guys, I'm doing the learning blog next Monday. Does anyone doing it next week want to switch with me? Because I did my learning blog last week on Monday too, and it was also on Lit. Circles, so my learning blog will be kind of repetitive. If anyone has time, do you want to switch days with me?
Thanks if you can! :D

3 Words Challenge

My name is Jasper and I am in grade 8. For the 3 words challenge, I picked my three words, coincidentally, all starting with the letter C. These words are CURIOSITY,  COURAGE and CREATIVITY.

First of all, I chose the word Curiosity because I usually don't get curious and accept new things offered to me. Examples would be new types of food and activities. This doesn't benefit me, since if I don't get out of my comfort zone, I won't be able to experience new accomplishments or fun.

Second of all, I chose the word Courage because I am sort of a scaredy-cat. If something seems scary, I would generally not participate in it (besides amusement park rides). This also could limit my fun and amusement. Although it's good to be cautious, being too cautious can be very regretful.

Finally, I chose the word Creativity because I am not very creative. When I try to think of speech topics, I end up with boring or copied themes. When I try to think of project ideas I always end up with a very uninteresting idea. If I challenge my creativity more, it would not only help me for school, but for more enjoyable plans in my day as well.

As you can see, I have a lot to work on. Hopefully, unlike my New Year's Resolution, I can follow this 3 words challenge and give myself more qualities.

Learning Blog for December 11, 2014

     1. What did we do?

We did our paragraph booklets and we were working on our descriptive paragraph section. We get to think of three words that describes us also we had to do why we chose these words and make a third person sentence of your three words.

      2. Why did we do it?

We highlighted our descriptive paragraphs because we can find which sentences are topic sentence, transition words or phrases, and key words that identify the type of paragraph. We did our exercise one for our paragraph booklet so we had to write some descriptive sentences for one topic. We wrote descriptive sentences for one topic in the paragraph booklet because it can help us think ideas more quickly. We had to think of three words that represent you or what you need to improve on so that we could know who we are and what we want to represent as for the three words and sentence challenge.

      3. Reflections and Connections

Highlighting the descriptive paragraphs can help us find important key words and topic sentence so it could enhance our sentence structure or making sentences specific.

      4. Homework reminders

-Posting three words you chose and it has to be in blog for tomorrow.

-Writing three sentences to third person about your three words on paper.

      -Paragraph booklet

      5. Homework tips

For your descriptive paragraphs, it has be really specific and the sentences has to be detailed as possible. You don't have to do your descriptive paragraph for homework but you could do it for extra work to improve your sentence structure.

Learning Blog for December 9, 2014

1. What did we do?
We handed in our innovation fair proposals. We didn't get to do any work because of the power outage.
2. Why did we do it?
We handed in out innovation fair proposals to show the teacher that we've completed our assignments on time, and so that they can be evaluated to see which ones are approved and which ones need amendments.
3. Reflections and connections- how were today's class skills or subject matter relevant beyond humanities 8? Where might it be useful and how?
Handing in our proposals now is like making deadlines in the future at a job. It helps develop our work habits, and good work habits will be useful for a lifetime.
4. No homework has been assigned.
5. N/A (with regards to above statement)

MS.LEES HUM 8 BLOCK 4

What did we do?

Because today was Monday, our HUM 8 block 4 class did Literature Circle discussions. Afterwards, we worked on our conclusion to our Dialectical Journals and started to write two things our group did well and need to work on for our discussions. We did that again, but this time for our individual participation in the discussions.

Why did we do it? (Learning Intentions)

We did these discussions to practice our oral conversations and our speaking skills. For example, we worked on contributing ideas, asking questions, provoking conversations and encouraging others to participate. We also did these discussions to let the teacher and peers make sure that we actually read the story and could keep up with the conversation.
We did reflections and self evaluations to practice our self-evaluating skills, which could be used frequently in everyday lives. Not only that, but we did reflections to see how much we were listening to the conversation and how much we understood what others had to say.

Reflections and Connections

The Literature Circle things we did today could help us beyond Humanities. For example, these discussions could help you prompt discussions within your friends easier and help you contribute to them more frequently. The self-evaluations that we do can help us correctly evaluate ourselves in other activities, which we might not have a teacher there to do for us. Lastly, reflections help us with our understanding skills, as well as summary skills and listening skills.
A connection that I have, is that in elementary school, we also did these Lit. Circles, but not in so much depth.

Homework Reminders

* Remember to finish your Lit. Circles'...
                          - Reflections
                          - Self Evaluations
                          - 2 good points/ points to work on for your group/self

* INNOVATION FAIR PROPOSALS DUE TOMORROW!

* Research Story outlines if you haven't finished them

Homework Tips

* For your Lit. Circle points that are good/need to improve of your group, get together with them to agree on the same ideas.

* Don't rely on how you think you did on your self-evaluations, use what your tallier tallied on your sheet. Chances are, they are right and you are just full of yourself or you are underestimating yourself.

Learning Log

What did we do?
Today, we talked a bit about Innovation Fair and outlining paragraphs. We also handed in our self evaluation for this term in.

Why?
We talked about our Innovation Fair projects because many of us have trouble coming up with ideas. We learned about outlining paragraphs so that we can get used to doing it, and it will help with organizing and writing future paragraphs and essays. Writing paragraphs with an outline is way easier, and it saves time as well.

 Connections and Reflections
Using the paragraph outline can help with writing speeches and essays, and it can be used to organize any type of paragraphs, which will be useful in the future, in any classes. We talked a little bit about Innovation Fair, and it could help with next year's fair since we will know what to do.

Homework Reminders
For tomorrow (December 5th), have the 5 paragraph outlines ready. Also, remember to highlight transition words or phrases. The Innovation Fair proposal is due next Tuesday (December 9th). Don't forget to do your Dialectical Journal for Lit, and have it ready for next Monday (December 8th).

Homework Tips
Outlining: The supporting sentences can be in point form. You don't have to copy the whole paragraph out again for ones that say 'unscramble.'

Learning Blog

1. What did we do?
We handed in our dialectical journals, went over how to write learning blogs a little bit, and started our self-evaluations for humanities.
2. Why did we do it?
We handed in our dialectical journals to show the teacher that we completed our homework, and we went over how to write learning blogs to clarify things a little bit. We're doing self-evaluations so that we can learn how to reflect upon our learning, recognize our strengths and weaknesses, and set goals for ourselves.
3. Reflections and connections- how were today's class skills or subject matter relevant beyond humanities 8? Where might it be useful and how?
Handing in our dialectical journals is a matter of work habits, and it's important to have good work habits in order to do well in school later on, or to keep a job in the future. Doing self-evaluations can be applicable in other classes, and it helps us become more aware of how we are doing, which will be very useful in school in the future. When we do self-evaluations, we can also become more aware of what we need to improve on, and how we can get better, so we would be able to learn faster.
4. Homework reminders- what is due and when
Our self evaluations are due on Thursday, and our innovation fair proposals are due next Monday.
5. Homework tips- hints, videos, or resources that might help students do well on today's homework
    Tips for self evaluations:
-be honest about where you are at in each category, because you are trying to improve your learning, not impress your teacher or your classmates
-set realistic goals that you will be able to achieve, but don't set goals that are too easy either; push yourself out of your comfort zone
-act on what you said you will do, because that's the only way you'll really be able to improve

Limitless Creativity

"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have"
This quote inspired me because I'm not a creative person, but when I think of a creative idea, I somehow manage to think of more, without really running out of ideas. I'm in art class, so I constantly have to come up with creative ideas for my projects. I think that over time it's made me more creative. I guess it's true that if you don't use your brain, it will get lazy over time. Being creative has always been hard for me, but now it's becoming a lot easier. I actually let the ideas flow now, in contrast to when I just stopped thinking when I thought I was out of logical ideas.

Creativity is the Answer to Every Problem!

“Creativity can solve almost any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything.” — George Lois

This quote inspired me because it shows what creativity can really do. No matter what the problem is, a little creativity is all you need to figure out how to solve it! This quote shows that creativity is not just being able to create beautiful pieces of art, but it also shows being able to think and analyze situations in a creative way.

Creativity

I chose this quote because it attaches to creativity and it looks like a real meaning of creativity to me. For example, if you have a bad mark on a test, you learn from your mistakes. This quote is saying that if people had got a lower mark on their assignments, they can learn new things from other people and peers, what they have to improve on. It doesn't matter how perfect you are because people have different ideas by their own mind or different answers for their project. Well if you're not really smart just because people would make fun of you or thinking that you failed a assignment but you can have different imagination and ideas also you are having fun to fix your mistakes but you have to work hard on things that you're struggling with.

Nothing is impossible the world itself says im possible

to me this quote is saying that you can really do anything that nothing is to big to accomplish and by the part that it says the world itself says Im possible to me that means that you are here today and that you are living life and having fun!!!. And also it means that you may be stubborn or not so nice all the time but if to me maybe if people can handle you they can handle the impossible that people might think know one can do.

Creativity

I chose this picture because it connects to the idea of creativity completely. Like the video "Oblivious to You. Amazing to Others", this picture states that ideas you think are boring, plain and copied are usually actually unique, amazing and original (unless you copied an idea completely). This means that something you don't think is as creative can be the next best thing, as long as you believe.

MUN Rhymes with Fun

A couple Mars days ago, I went to Earth on my flying saucer to go to school with the aliens on Earth for an Earth day, which the aliens on Earth called Friday, for the very first time ever. The people of Mars often visit the aliens on Earth. When I reached Earth, in one Mars hour, I was so surprised with what the aliens from Earth looked like. Some of them had brown skin, others had tan skin, and still others had white skin, unlike the people of Mars, who had different shades of green skin. I thought the aliens from Earth would have purple, blue, pink, orange, or green hair like us, but it turned out that most of them had brown, black, yellow, or red hair. I felt a bit out of place with my lime green skin and bright purple hair, but the aliens from Earth were very friendly and made me feel very welcome.
A few aliens with black hair asked me if I wanted to go to the Model United Nations club at 11:10 and at 2:45. I didn't know what that was about, but I decided to go there anyways. They led me to a classroom on the second floor of the school. The executive MUN members explained to me that MUN was a simulation of the United Nations, which is an organization made up of most of the countries on Earth. Each member of the MUN gets to choose to be the delegation of any country on Earth and then debate about global issues. Some of the most prominent countries were named Russia, USA, and China, which the people of Mars knew about. Those choices were taken almost immediately. Other delegates chose countries that I've never even heard of, like Liechtenstein, Senegal, and Nigeria. The delegate were all in groups of two, with placards with the name of the country they were representing written on them. The executive members gave the delegates the topic "Human Organ Trafficking," and allowed them around ten Earth minutes to do some research. I also had to participate, so I chose to be the delegation of Germany along with a girl with black hair. I didn't know much about Germany, so I did some research on Germany and human organ trafficking. Apparently there was an extreme shortage of available donor organs in Germany, but the laws against human organ trafficking were still strictly enforced. When the time was up, the delegates who wished to speak were put on the speakers list.  The delegations of Russia and USA spoke a lot, probably because they were representing two of the most prominent countries on Earth. I noticed though, that at times, some delegates would attack the delegate instead of the argument. The delegates were all beginners though, so no one said very much about their mistakes. In the beginning, I was too shy to raise my placard and speak, but towards the end, I spoke twice; once to point out that there was an extreme shortage of donor organs in Germany, and that the laws for organ trafficking should be strict nevertheless. The second time, I rebutted a country named Switzerland's argument. I don't know how well I presented my points, but an executive member told me that I had some pretty good points. I immediately decided that the next time I came back to Earth, which would be a week later, I wanted to go to MUN again.
In my opinion, pretty much everything about MUN was great; from the activities, to the members. I honestly think that there is nothing about the club that needs some improvement. I have a week until I go to MUN again, so meanwhile, why not do some research on some of Earth's countries?

The FHMUN Report

FHMUN REPORT

I have been wondering about the Fraser Heights Model United Nations club so I decided to interview a new delegate of the MUN club:

Qiyang: What is MUN?

New delegate: MUN lets you experience being a United Nations member. In a way, it is a bit like debate. In MUN, you get to solve issues within a specific committee.

Qiyang: When is it?

New delegate: The meetings are every Friday at lunch and after school in room 214. The FHMUN conference is on November 1st and 2nd.

Qiyang: What do you do in MUN?

New delegate: You get to learn the rules and procedures, and you get to practice speaking in front of other MUN members. You get to vote and negotiate with other countries.

Qiyang: Why did you join this club?

New delegate: I joined MUN because it is a great learning experience, and it can improve my public speaking skills. It is also a great way of meeting new people, and the club is very interesting. I also get to learn more about the countries and the issues occurring in the world.

Qiyang: Would you recommend others to join MUN?

New delegate: Yes, I would recommend this to people who would like to learn more about the world and to people who would like to experience being a United Nations member. I am looking forward to the conference on November 1st and 2nd, and I am hoping to see a lot of other delegates there!
